Kerala Houseboats

The houseboats of Kerala are giant country crafts measuring up to 110 feet and up to 18 feet in width. In the early period, they were converted from big wooden boats known as ‘Kettuvalloms’ which were used to carry materials and provisions from major towns and ports to the interior places and to carry spices, tea, pepper, coconut and similar materials from the interior places to the ports for exports. With the advent of mechanised transportation like lorry and other goods carriers which are very fast and could reach any place connected by road, these ‘Kettuvalloms’ went out of use and were idly floating in the backwaters. These were retrieved for posterity by constructing a super structure and a roof on the boat providing air-conditioned rooms with all modern facilities, attached toilets, kitchen, lounge and what not. The houseboat is provided with an engine and is manned by competent staffs including a driver, a cook, an assistant driver and others.
